I've been reading A Wild Sheep Chase on the train and the tram. I really like Murakami's stuff, although it's a bit odd that the guy's a translator yet someone else converts his novels into English.
Anyway yeah, I'm nearly at the end of it and I really have no idea what's going on. There's all this weird shit going on where very few of the characters have names, a kind of Vonnegutesque view of free will, and well, a sheep that lives in people's brains. I disagree that the main character is apathetic. To me it seems more like he's carefully waiting for things he thinks worth doing and caring about.
