Reading Signs of Life by M. John Harrison. Damned good author. Seems like the sort of stuff Iain Banks is trying to write. But embedded in the prose there's a word underlined. (Underlined underlined for effect). It looks fucking odd and out of place. Especially beside the next to two words italicised.
