Tomorrow we're going searching second hand bookstores for texts we need for this semester. To do this I've gotta find out what the texts I need for the semester are. It's a logical progression, understanding needs is one of the first steps to fulfilling them. We spent a whole fucking three weeks learning this in software design last year so it's not as obvious as you'd think.
Anyway, the point is I was looking in the fucken book lists. For software engineering we've got after ten books divided into three sections: set texts, recommended texts and 'further reading'. These divisions translate roughly to 'buy these', 'buy these' and 'get these from the library'. There's a lot of stuff in there about personal software engineering practices which makes a lot of sense, and then right at the bottom is The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. Goddamnit but someone on the syllabus committee is a self-help nut.
