I dunno exactly how old I was, but I must have been seven or eight because we were living in Willunga Street. I'd just found out about microbes, that there were things so small you couldn't see them. In my head I turned it around, thinking that if there were things too tiny to see then there must be things too big to see as well. Which is kind of true, but that's not what I was thinking. For a while afterwards I was afraid I was going to be crushed by some giant I couldn't see. The industrial noises that Portland seems to have a lot of frightened the fuck out of me.
