I was wandering around Molag Mar in Morrowind the other day when I skidded down a cliff while sneaking and landed on the ground. That really showed my how limited sound technology in games is. Really all we have is a bunch of standard noises cut and pasted into the game with a few minor situational effects thrown over if you have a decent soundcard. I should've been able to hear myself skid down that cliff and hit the ground with my lizard feet. It's a big subconscious reminder that you're playing a game.
Anyway, Ion Storm answered my prayer a coupla days after it went out. They're including a sound-physics system in thier next two games. There's a preview on Gamespot about it. The idea sounds fucking brilliant.
