Reading reviews about the Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. Professional reviewers just don't get stuff. The book's about how spiritually barren post-imperial Japan is. It's not that difficult to comprehend, and not that difficult to understand where the author's coming from. But people paid to read the damned thing come up with shite like 'It was cut extensively, so it doesn't make sense'. Jesus. The book was transalated as part of a program to teach English to the Japanese. Therefore any cutting would be counterproductive, dontcha think?
