So my brother is the stage manager of the latest play we're doing. He comes into my room today and starts asking how I'm doing, like how much of my role I know is a reflection upon his abilities. So I pointed out to him that the script was open on the bed right next to where I was sitting. He remarked that it was only on one of the first few pages. He left after I told him that it was my first scene so of course I was looking at that.
A stage manager's role is to open and close curtains and tell the lighting crew what to do. Least, in our company that's the way it goes.
