Gave ZAngband a whirl earlier. I died yesterday in a game I'd had going for three days. I had a decent level, nice armor and a cool weapon, as well as a bunch of special abilities I needed. Then I died raiding an orc camp because I wasn't paying attention while I was talking to someone. So I started a new game tonight. Piddled about on the fourth level using summon monster scrolls for some quick experience and to make room in my inventory. Went down to the fifth, and noticed I had one scroll left. Cast it and the screen literally filled with kobolds. One of the things I love about turn based games is they give you the chance to stop and think. I used a scroll of phase door to get to the edge of the pack. Took me a good half an hour to clear them out and kill thier boss. Still haven't IDed the sword I got from it all.
