Seems to me like the language C is scattered with various hazing rituals, these puzzling little stumbling blocks that you come up against and have to figure out yourself or not continue. The first is actually getting the compiler to compile the 'hello, world!' program. The second I've found is making the random number function actually return random numbers. It's a pain in the arse.
